Travel Nurse Requirements

  • Two years of experience: Many assume this is an agency requirement when its really the facility’s requirement. Two years is typically a standard requirement. Some specialties will require more years. My advice to all nurses is to ask yourself if you can take care the sickest patient without asking for help. If you’re answer is “no”, then you are not ready. If you answer “yes” confidently… then you are ready. Keep in mind, expect no one to hold your hand once you are at the facility. Orientation can be a whole week or just one day. It can be incredibly dangerous for the nurse and patient without experience.

  • Floating: Floating is not something everyone likes… but it is expected. Never float to a unit that you have no experience in. If or when a Nurse Manager calls for an interview, ask the Unit Manager about travelers floating such as how often, is there a rotation, etc.

  • Certs/License: Always make sure that all licenses and certifications are updated. Keep in mind, most agencies will reimburse certs and license if it is required by the position.

  • ADN/BSN: Not every facility requires a BSN but most teaching facilities do ask for a BSN. Nurses are always encouraged to pursue a BSN but it is not required for travel nursing. It depends on each facility.
